Increase speed reading by not sub-vocalizing.
The tendency to do sub-vocalization is one habit that we need get rid of if we want to increase our reading speed. If you do so, you will realize that your reading time has been lower than is should be. Sub-vocalization is hard to break because this habit has been ingrained in us but from grade school. But, it is possible to eliminate it.
A good way to overcome sub-vocalization is by using our fingers as a pointer to guide our reading. As our eyes follow our fingers as they move smoothly along the lines, you will be training yourself to read faster. There would be no time to pronounce the words silently as the fingers are already moving to the next word and to the next line.
If you are the type to always re-read phrases in order to understand what you are reading then you definitely are a slow reader. Re-reading phrases means that you either have not been focusing on what you are reading thus you are unable to understand it or the subject matter is not familiar that you want to keep reading it to fully comprehend it.
Experts have said that reading the phrase again and again would not help. It would be best to jot it down and continue on as there might be other words or phrases in the text that would clear things up for you. You can easily correct this habit by giving your total attention to what you are reading and you can get a piece of paper to cover the ones you have already read so you would not be tempted to go over it again.
These old habits need to be corrected in order to increase your reading speed. It can be done but it would take time and a lot of practice. There are other methods out there that would be of help but you can start on these two and you would then see that you have already doubled your reading speed.
